The Bike shop

Topanga Creek Outpost is a bicycle shop, adventure cycling outfitter and a leather craft store all under one roof. Having been in the bike industry for almost 20 years, we have the great luxury to focus our business only on what we're passionate about — mountain bikes, adventure touring bikes, custom bike builds, and custom hand-laced wheels. Inside our wood cabin you'll also find lots of bikepacking gear, select apparel, handcrafted goods and unique gift items.

UnPredict Your Journey has been our mantra and we value the quality of life above everything else. We're closed on Wednesdays in order to go on biking and hiking adventures. Our bike mechanics get to work on bicycles outdoors underneath a giant oak tree overlooking the creek all year long. Inside the shop's cozy wood cabin is where our Rogue Journeymen leathersmith churns out leather belts, wallets and bags. Every day we feel very lucky to have this great spot in Topanga for the amazing experiences.

Over the years we have won numerous awards such as The Top Mountain Bike Pro Shop in the US, America's Best Bike Shops 4 times, and California Small Business of the Year. We are also a Surly Destination Shop so you'll find many Surly bikes and accessories in stock, along with other great adventure and mountain bikes from BMC, Pivot and more.

Because we're right on the edge of Topanga State Park, sometimes billed as "the largest state park within a city limit in the U.S.", we have an amazing trail system right in our backyard. The park offers extensive fire roads and singletracks for all levels of off-road riding. And the trailheads are just a short ride from our shop for an all-day mountain biking fun. Through our bike rental program, you can tackle all of these fun trails on one of our racing or performance bicycles.

Rogue Journeymen Leather Goods

In 2015, we kicked our creativity into high gear and started Rogue Journeymen, our own house brand for handcrafted leather goods. At the beginning we made small key chains and valet trays, and put initials on leather saddles. Now RJ has grown into a full-fledged brand with a variety of leather, canvas and Pendleton Wool products. We hand make belts, bags, wallets, dog collars, notebook covers, and fulfill lots of custom requests from customers at the Outpost. Rouge Journeymen goods are also sold in other retailers in Brooklyn, Phoenix, Omaha, San Pedro at Crafted, and soon in Portland, OR. Some of our products are available in our online store.

About Topanga

Topanga is a canyon community in the Santa Monica Mountains nestled between Malibu, Pacific Palisades and the San Fernando Valley (Woodland Hills to be exact). Truly a hidden gem in Los Angeles, for decades Topanga has retained its retreat-like settings and rustic charms. Topanga is also one of L.A.'s more unique communities that has attracted independent and creative people throughout its history. It's been home to legendary musicians like Woodie Guthrie, Neil Young and Alice Cooper. In fact, our shop location was once the rehearsal studio for Jim Morrison of The Doors.

When you drive through Topanga Canyon you will immediately be awed by the lush and forest-like surrounding. It seems so remote but yet our shop is only 12 miles from the Santa Monica Pier. We have chosen this location for our shop not only for its natural serenity, but also for many of the prime mountain bike trails found in all of Southern California. Every day we are amazed at the beauty of this place and feel very lucky to continue doing what we love to do — riding bikes and helping people in the community to enjoy riding as well.

The trails

The Santa Monica Mountains stretches from Encino in the east, through all of Malibu Creek State Park, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, and west into the Ventura County. Mountain bike enthusiasts can find many trails of various difficulty levels within a 30-minutes driving distance from our shop. Some of the popular trails are the Backbone Trail, Big Sycamore Canyon, Cheeseboro/Sulphur Springs, Caballero Canyon, Los Robles Canyon and more.

We welcome you to take a scenic drive up to Topanga to visit our shop. Come relax in our adirondack chairs next to the creek or sit by the pot belly stove inside the cabin on a cold day. But you should definitely bring a bike and go on a great ride.

How to find us

History of the shop

In 1999 we started as LA Bike Tours taking people on bicycle excursions around Los Angeles. We took out-of-town visitors and locals alike on bikes exploring and learning about Los Angeles area history. Destinations included Venice Beach, Beverly Hills, the Getty Center and many historic points of Hollywood. As avid mountain bikers we also offered off-road rides as well. We were proud to show people that Los Angeles really was a bicycle friendly city despite its deep-rooted car culture.

As we became more established in Hollywood we realized there was a need for a bicycle shop in the neighborhood. Hollywood Pro Bicycles was formed and our continued growth in the unexpected location on Hollywood's famous Walk of Fame surprised many people. Hollywood is a very diverse community and our customers included roadies, mountain bikers, bike messengers and urban commuters. We were glad to have helped Hollywood become a stronger cycling community over the years.

With the move to Topanga Canyon we changed our name to Topanga Creek Bicycles, and we have now become Topanga Creek Outpost. We will continue our mission to provide the highest quality products and best services to all surrounding neighborhoods.
