Start You Adventures with a Great Bikepacking Bike

It's time to go bikepacking because California has seen tremendous amounts of rain this year and that means wild flower super blooms and endless grasslands are up and down the state. As a Los Angeles area bikepacking bicycles specialty shop, we can help you select just the right bike for your adventures.

When it comes to fit, comfort, durability and touring-specific features, Surly makes some of the most tried-and-true bikepacking bikes out there. We can also customize them to match your riding style, visual aesthetics, and individuality. Here are some of the popular bikepacking and touring bikes.

Surly Bridge Club

As a highly versatile touring bike, the Bridge Club hits the sweet spot that separates on- and off-road excursions. The simplistic design makes it fully adept to handle a full rack and pannier setup, frame bags, or any combination of the two. It doesn't feel sluggish on paved shortcuts, but can also hold its own on dirt detours. If you're feeling a little zesty on your next road tour, you won't be ill-prepared for reroutes through the woods. The Bridge Club is designed to handle it all.

Two build kit options: Pavement (700c) and Off-Road (27.5)

Surly Disc Trucker

When you're carrying a full load on your touring bike and are headed for a mountainous terrain, you want the additional braking power on tap when you need it. The Surly Disc Trucker offers you just that. No detail was too small when designing the Disc Trucker. The caliper mount is placed between chain and seatstays to give you plenty of clearance for various rack and fender options.

It comes with Surly Truckstop Bar with built-in riser for even more hand positions and greater comfort.

Surly Ogre

We really love the Ogre, so does our shop dog Rover. Surly even named the Ogre color "Rover Brown" after Rover. What makes Ogre such a great bike? It can get you to your job during the week, then way out of town on the weekend. It's not sluggish on pavement or gravel and can also hold its own on singletrack.

Ogre brings several sensible features to the 29er platform, including horizontal slotted dropouts with Gnot-Boost spacing, a tweaked non-suspension corrected geometry, and a beefy tire clearance. Based on the tried-and-true geometry of Surly's venerable Karate Monkey, Ogre is designed to be a platform for exploration, commuting, trailer-pulling, on-road and off-road touring, and just riding along.

The Surly Ogre comes standard with the Rohloff torque arm so it's ready for some badass adventures. We highly recommend it.

The Grapper is Surly's dedicated drop-bar trail bike. With mountain geo designed around a comfortable, confident drop-bar hand position, it's lively and responsive on single track, double track, and other degraded surfaces. Ready to haul essential gear for all-day dirt rides and quick bikepacking excursions, thru-axles front and rear provide ideal stiffness and handling.

Built around 27.5” wheels and compatible with internally geared hub and single-speed setups, Surly's tried-and-true Gnot-Boost spacing allows riders to run 142mm or 148mm rear hubs.

Surly Long Haul Trucker

Surly Long Haul Trucker is one of the most highly praised touring bikes ever existed. LHT provides dependability on the daily commute or trans-continental excursion. It's designed to go the distance, and the rack mounts enable it to haul a bunch of stuff. Its steel frame tubing, relaxed geometry, long wheelbase, wide range gearing along with abundance of eyelets meet all the criteria of a great touring bike.

What makes the Surly Long Haul Truck truly unique and legendary is in the details - extra spare spokes mounted on the chainstay and low bottom bracket position for stability are two examples that only a true touring aficionado can appreciate.

Surly Long Haul Trucker has been discontinued in favor of its close twin, the Disc Trucker.

Surly Pack Rat

The Pack Rat is designed around porteur-style racks and front-loading optimization, with a front cargo-specific design to eliminate steering issues. The fork features internal routing for generator hubs and rear frame dropouts to accommodate multiple drivetrain configurations. It's an ideal choice for loaded commutes and bike trips with a lighter load, but also rides great when unloaded.

Features 650b wheels, with room for tires up to 650b x 48mm. Surly 8-pack rack included with complete bike.

Surly ECR

Discontinued

The ECR is Surly’s ultimate off-road touring machine. Surly has admitted that ECR is "something of a lovechild borne of our Krampus, Ogre and Long Haul Trucker." Whatever the ménage à trois was going on in Surly's basement, the ECR is one kick-ass lovechild. It can run racks, fenders and disc simultaneously. It's compatible with singlespeed, derailleur, and Rohloff hub. It's got lots of braze-ons to mount water bottle cages and racks so you can bring lots of gear with you on the trip.

Re-designed specifically for 27.5+ or 29+ wheel platforms, Surly ECR is a 29er on steroids with more width, more height, more traction and more float than the regular 29ers. Needless to say the ECR can tackle any terrain and any trail condition with ease. Now go out there with your ECR and don't let others judge you. It's time for you to judge others.

Surly Troll

Discontinued

Though the Troll's geometry is that of a 26"-wheeled mountain bike, it's unlike most mountain bikes you'll find anywhere you go. The frame has ample clearance to accommodate triple chainring and Boost setups, and its maximum 26 x 3" tire clearance allows 27.5" wheel size as well. With its sloping toptube, the Troll provides generous standover clearance even when running high-volume rubber.

Use the Troll as a mountain bike, cruiser, commuter or touring rig. Make it your go-to utility tractor. Try out different tires and handlebars. Add some racks, build it with gears, or strip it down to a singlespeed drivetrain. Take it camping, ride it to the grocery store or session on your favorite single-track. Build it up, ride it for a while, then reinvent it.
